Paddleboarding in South Beach

Kayaking and paddleboarding are both excellent activities to take advantage of here in South Beach, with South Beach Kayak offering a prime location to experience Florida’s beautiful tropical waters. Sandwiched between the Venetian Causeway and the luxurious Sunset Islands, this friendly surf shack offers both kayak and paddleboard rentals, seven days a week, along with lessons on how to use their equipment if you’re a first-timer. The shop is also an easy bike ride from HI Miami Beach’s location, though you could also walk (if you feel ambitious) or grab an Uber.

I personally went paddleboarding for the first time recently, and so my description of the experience will be from the point of view of a beginner. For those of you who are unfamiliar, a paddleboard resembles a surfboard, though somewhat wider and heavier. You stand on it like you would a surfboard, but you do not propel yourself forward with your arms or the power of waves. Rather, a long paddle, similar to what you would use with a canoe, is used to push oneself gently across the water. As you may expect, this takes some level of balance and skill to paddle successfully without tipping over. Luckily for me, once I found my center of gravity on the board, I was able to stay balanced with relatively little effort. Just make sure to keep your knees bent when the water gets rough or a boat passes, so that you may more easily predict the undulating waves beneath you.

The route my group and I took on our boards through the canals of the Sunset Islands offered a good opportunity to see fish and other wildlife that inhabit the bayside waters. The staff at South Beach Kayak also mentioned the possibility of seeing manatees in Sunset Lake, where no motorboat traffic is allowed. Unfortunately, my group and I didn’t see any, but other people have clearly had more luck, as the manatees in that area are apparently rather common. On the other end of the canals, where the larger boats and docks reign, there is a chance to see dolphins as well.

So, what’s your decision, traveler? Does paddleboarding sound like a worthwhile adventure to partake in, soaking up the sunrays and local sights?
